    Profile of Changshu
Geographical Location
Located in the southeast of Jiangsu Province, Changshu stretches along Yangtze River in the north with Shanghai to its east, Suzhou to its south and Wuxi to its west. Changshu is a new industrial port city.
 
Area and Population
It covers an area of 1,264 square kilometers, a home to 1.04 million residents and a 500,000-strong floating population. There're 10 towns, a forestry center and two economic development zones under its jurisdiction.
 
Long History and Rich Culture
Changshu boasts about 3000 years of civilized history and beautiful natural landscapes. In its ancient times, Changshu nurtured 473 outstanding scholars, among them 8 were Number One Scholars and 9 were Prime Ministers. Changshu is the home city of 21 Academicians of the China Academy of Science and China Academy of Engineering.
 
Beautiful Sceneries
It has two National AAAA class Scenic Spots "Yushan¨CShanghu Scenic Spot" and "the Sha Jiabang Reed Marshes Scenic spot", and also other sceneries such as the Yanzi Mausoleum£¬the Xingfu Temple built in Qi and Liang Dynasty, a Square Pagoda, Wen Tonghe's former residence, etc. Changshu has successively been cited as a National Sanitary City, National Garden City, National Environmental Protection Model City, National Green City and National Excellent Tourist City. In October of 2004, Changshu won the title of "International Garden City" issued by UN, beating 200 cities all around the world.
 
Excellent Transportation Conditions
The Sujiahang Expressway and Yangtze Riverside Expressway have a juncture in the city. State Highway 204 and State A-class Roads Suyuzhang and Xitai cross the city. Sutong Yangtze River Bridge will be open to the traffic in 2007. Changshu port is a national A class port open to the outside maintaining trade and navigation relations with 248 ports in 50 countries and regions. During 2005, it was classified among the Top 10 Inland ports with the throughput exceeding 20.5 million tons. The city is 90 kilometers from Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport and 140 km from Shanghai Pudong International Airport.
 
Adequate Infrastructure Facilities  
Perfect infrastructures deliver electricity, water, heating, air supply and communications. Seventy-eight transformers have a maximum capacity of 3.55 million KVA for an abundant power supply. The city's daily water supplying capacity reaches 700,000 tons. There are more than 750,000 program-controlled telephone exchangers.
 
Rapid Economic Development
In the past 20 years, Changshu's annual GDP rises exceeded 15%. In 2005, it realizes a GDP of US$ 8.5 billion, with the per capita figure topping US$ 8000. Changshu ranked fifth among China's 100 most powerful county-level cities and second for basic competition strength.
